Vegetable garden of yesteryear

I went on vacation to Williamsburg last week. In the colonial downtown area, they had a demonstration vegetable garden. It was lush with all kinds of vegetables and very great looking tomato cages and trellises. They had kids sowing vegetables seeds using tools that they would have used back then. It was really cute.  This is a great town to visit for families with young children. They'd have a blast! Here are pictures of the impressive vegetables they had growing in the garden.
Peas with bamboo trellis
I think these were tomato
Cabbage shaded from the sun
Ginormous kale going to seed, at least 7 feet tall
artichoke plants, also ~6 feet. I had no idea that artichoke grew like this...

  1. Wow! Makes me wonder if i should've put my kale out front to shade the house. I had no idea they could get that big.

    1. Yes, I was totally amazed as well! I was very tempted to grab one of the seed pod!

  2. oh my gosh - I would have wanted to steal some of that artichoke. They must have started that stuff really early indoors. Love those y-shaped sticks. I was just tying and trellising and supporting things yesterday and was thinking how much easier everything would be with y-shaped supports.

    1. I really liked the trellis that they had. It was very oganic and blended into the garden really well.
