June 27, 2011 Harvest Monday

I got my first tomato...although I think I may have picked it a little too early. Here is an early girl 50 and an ichiban eggplant.
The taste verdict...well...it was a little mediocre. I could taste the a hint of sweetness but it really lacked flavor and the skin was really really thick. The next time I will let it ripen a little longer.
The eggplants are doing quite well! There are flowers on all three eggplants with fruits starting on the fairy tale. The plant isn't growing very much vertically, but there are quite a bit of flowers so I think I will be harvesting some more eggplants soon.
Fairytale eggplant

  1. Yeah!! You got more ichiban eggplant!! Congrats! BTW, I didn't know you lived out this way. I love the u-pick farms on Sauvie's island. That's where I usually go to pick fruit. So fun!!

  2. Yes, I went to college there and lived there for about 5 years. I tried moving back after grad school but couldn't find jobs in my field in the area. I still haven't been able to find a berry picking farm out here. I just loved going fruit picking - peaches, cherries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries. Unfortunately, I developed an allergy to peaches and cherries but I can still eat berries (knock on wood!).

  3. YAY! for the first tomato! They usually aren't the best tasting, but they get better and better. I was pleasantly surprised by the good flavor of my early tomatoes, but there were only four and it looks like it will be a while before #5 ripens.

  5. I'm so jealous of your eggplant! I have a couple black beauties growing and there are tons of flowers and foliage but no eggplant babies yet. Looks yummy!

  6. Granny - I'm really glad you mentioned that the first tomatoes usually don't taste good on your blog. Otherwise I would have been disappointed...but honestly, I'm happy I got a real tomato!

Allison - I can't wait to see how the fairytale looks and taste!

Andrea - For a while I thought that the eggplants will not do well, but it is doing pretty good in its new location.

  7. You have many beautiful colours in your garden to harvest. I like that ichiban deep purple colour and those sexy red tomatoes.

  8. What a beautiful eggplant. I'm not growing the long type this year. Just the Italian type. I can't wait to see what it grows like. And my first tomatoes are never as good as the later ones. I think the plant tries too hard with the first one.
